Intervale Green Rooftop Farm

A Bronx Urban Farm Sponsored by Women's Housing and Economic Development Corporation (WHEDco)

About

The Rooftop Farm

Intervale Green Rooftop Farm is located at 1330 Intervale Avenue, Bronx, New York 10459.  Sponsored by WHEDco, it serves as a way for residents to learn how to plant seeds, properly harvest produce, compost, and cook healthy meals.

The roof originally consisted of about 550 4 inch containers with  rocky soil, unsuitable for growing anything worth eating. In 2010 the roof underwent a transformation.  About half of the 4 inch containers were removed and replaced with 8 inch deep containers which were then filled with acceptable growing soil.  After the roof was reconfigured for farming, it was already mid summer.  However, an astonishing 136.41 lbs of produce were still harvested in the late summer and fall.  Without the need to switch the roof from a green roof to a rooftop farm, planting has begun as early as possible this season.  We have more time to farm, more time for cooking demonstrations and more time for fun.
